The Nehru Park, opened by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation at Sungam, is a safe haven for women.

The women’s only park, developed at a cost of Rs. 65 lakhs and opened a year ago, is open on all days between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The corporation has earned appreciation from women who are regulars to this park. “There are many posh localities in the city. But the corporation has opened a park in this area. It is something that has to be lauded. We are very safe here,” says Leela a resident.

A retired bank official endorses her view. However, she feels opening the gym would attract more women to the park. The gym, that offers services free of cost, has remained closed for quite sometime.

When contacted, Ward Councillor Leelavathi Unni said a gym trainer would be appointed soon so that women can make use of the gym facilities.
