After the government employees, it is now the turn of the teachers of the government-run schools to go on an indefinite strike, to fulfil their demands. Many of the state-run government schools declared holiday today due to non-availability of teachers.

The indefinite strike announced by the Joint Action Council for Tamil Nadu Teachers Association (JACTTA) will throw the education system into a deeper crisis this academic year because the schools all over the state had remained closed for nearly a month due to the heavy rains in November-December.

The demands of the teachers include filling up all the vacancies at various schools, revising salaries to match the wages being given to the Central Government teachers, and the abolishing of the teachers eligibility test.

As a precautionary step, the police have arrested several members of the JACTTA when they attempted a rail-roko protest.
