From special pujas, 68-hour non-stop yagnas, tattooing on forearms to free distribution of food at all Amma Unavagams, it was undiluted celebration time in Chennai and other parts of the State on Wednesday.

It was the 68th birthday of AIADMK Supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and the party cadre had unique ways and means of making it special.

It all began with the cutting of a 68 kg cake at the Party Headquarters in Chennai. Senior party leaders, including Presidium Chairman E. Madhusoodhanan, were present on the occasion, during which sweets were distributed to party cadre.

At the national level, according to an official release from the CM’s office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first one to wish Jayalalithaa over phone from New Delhi. The CM thanked the PM for his gesture.

Later, in his Twitter message, Mr. Modi said: “Birthday wishes to Jayalalithaa ji. May Almighty bless her with a long life, filled with good health”.

Other dignitaries who extended wishes included, Governor K. Rosaiah, Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Diplomats, including US Consul General in Chennai Phillip A Min, veteran journalist and political commentator Cho S. Ramaswamy, actor Saroja Devi, Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, also wished the CM.

More than 1,000 workers had tattooed the CM’s image and name on their forearms. Medical camps, blood donation camps, welfare schemes for the poor and the differently-abled, and many other activities were held.

Several ministers participated in special poojas and pulled temple chariots to mark the occasion.

On behalf of the HR and CE Department a massive tree sapling plantation programme was organised in 12 temples in which 6,868 saplings were planted across the State.

The Party’s IT wing had launched a dedicated phone line to greet their leader and the response was overwhelming, with more than 15 lakh people calling up to wish the CM.

“We are transcribing the messages and the best ones will be presented to Amma”, Party sources said.
