The merger of two AIADMK factions in Tamil Nadu leaving aside a tiny group supporting the now-jailed Sasikala is welcome in Indian political system where only two strong political parties either in the Centre or the States can be an ideal political system.

But the near elimination of a strong Opposition party at the Centre with Congress fast losing its ground, is also equally dangerous. It is welcome that the BJP has managed to play the big brother role in the ruling NDA alliance.

With the new generation totally moving away from Left ideology, there is the need for the emergence of a strong Opposition leader who can unite all anti-BJP forces. Political bosses of regional parties that are being run like family-business should realise that their days are over.
