Kancheepuram village farmers kill and burn over 80 dogs after they allegedly attacked and killed some sheep.
Animal rights activists are horrified over the killing and burning to death some 80 stray dogs in a Keezhamur village in Kancheepuram district, a week ago, after some dogs mauled their sheep. Huge outcry by activists who visited the spot led to filing of an FIR and arrest of two farmers for the killing of the dogs.
According to reports reaching here, the gory incident took place last week.
The local police said the dogs were first immobilized by using pesticide mixed in food left for them and then carried to isolated spots outside the village and set afire. Activists took pictures of the carcasses of half-burnt dogs as evidence of the gory act that has left the animal lovers shocked and demanding stringent action against the perpetrators.
But the villagers said that they had to take the action as all their pleas to the local authortieis fell on deaf ears. The dog menace had assumed alarming proportions, they said, as their goat and sheep were often attacked by pack of dogs. And so were children of the village.
The villagers claimed that at least 10 sheep were killed by the dogs. A villager said that the dogs often bit the people as well, but no action was being taken by the local authorities, forcing the villagers to take the action.
Dr Chinny Krishna, Co-Founder of Blue Cross and the Vice President, Animal Welfare Board of India, said it is a very shocking incident. Neutering the male dogs makes them less aggressive, and if the villagers had contacted the right body, preventive action could be taken. But killing the dogs is no solution.
Ashwat, an animal rights activist and an engineering college student in Chennai, who visited the spot said it was absolutely shocking to see the half burnt bodies and the stench in the area.
The police have collected few samples and say that they are in a position to prove that a crime was indeed committed.
Incidentally, this is not the first time that such an event has occurred in Tamil Nadu. Last year, in Coimbatore, some 40 street dogs were killed by a village panchayat .
Half burnt cacasses of dogs killed and burnt allegedly by farmers of the village, upset and angry after the dogs attacked and killed sheep over the past few days. The incident took place on Sunday,.
