The Election Commission announced today that the elections to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur assembly constituencies have been deferred by three weeks. They were originally rescheduled to be held on May 23.

The announcement follows the hearing of petitions filed by BJP Thanjavur candidate M.S. Ramalingam, Aravakurichi PMK’s M. Baskaran, and others. The Election Commission informed the Madras High Court Division Bench, that the polls were deferred for another three weeks. Fresh dates will be announced after consulting with the Election Commission of India, and the political candidates.

The cases have been adjourned by three weeks, with instructions to the Election Commission to file its reply.

The DMK president meanwhile has threatened to launch an agitation if the elections are postponed, claiming that deferring will work in favour of the ruling party.
