A few activists of the outfit Tamil Puli today attempted to burn in effigy Prime Minister Narendra Modi against the latest ban on cattle sale for slaughter.

A handful of workers assembled near the district collectorate and raised slogans against the Government decision and wanted it to not interfere in the food habits of people, police said.

Amid the slogan-raising, some activists brought an effigy of the Prime Minister and tried to set it afire. However, police overpowered them and foiled the attempt.

Meanwhile, a group of meat traders today voiced their opposition to the ban, since it would seriously affect the livelihood of nearly 1,000 meat merchants and their families, besides thousands of workers depending on it, they said.
