COIMBATORE: Members belonging to the BJP on Monday dispatched packets of salt to lyricist Vairamuthu and editor of Tamil daily Dinamani, condemning the poet for his alleged remarks on Andal, one of the 12 Vaishnavite Alwars.

The members, who gathered in front of the district collectorate, took out a rally to the post office and sent salt packets to the poet and to the daily’s editor.

They demanded an apology from Vairamuthu for calling Andal a dasi, and from the editor for carrying his speech in the daily.

“The lyricist should tender an unconditional apology to the people, who are deeply hurt by his statement. The reference which he quoted in his speech (with reference to Andal) is incorrect. No such research was done by any foreigner on the Vaishnavite saint,” they said.
