Thanjavur: A juvenile delinquent, who had been lodged at the Borstal school in Thanjavur, attempted to commit suicide by hanging. He was however rescued by the alert prison officials and admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.

19-year-old Manikandan, a resident of Pudukuppam in Sirkazhi, Nagapattinam district, was arrested by the Thiruvenkadu police on August 10 on the charges of stealing three mobile phones from a locked shop after breaking open its lock. He was produced in the judicial magistrate court in Sirkazhi and subsequently lodged at the Borstal school in Thanjavur the very same night.

Manikandan, who looked depressed, decided to end his life. Yesterday evening, he attempted to commit suicide by hanging from a wooden beam in the school with the help of his lungi. On noticing it, the prison officials swung into action and rescued him.
