Chaos and unruly scenes prevailed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly today with the DMK opposing the remarks made by the Chief Minister over Katchatheevu.

Trouble began when, during her thanksgiving speech to the Governor’s address to the Assembly, the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa mentioned that the DMK president M. Karunanidhi had sacrificed the state’s interests by letting go of the islet. She also asked a few questions to the former Chief Minister, as a ‘member of the House.’

The members of the opposition raised objection to it. When MK Stalin, the leader of the opposition tried to intervene, she clarified that her question was addressed to M. Karunanidhi, and remarked that he can either reply to her question directly, or through written statements.

Following this, despite assurances by the Assembly Speaker, P. Dhanapal, that the DMK would be given an opportunity to voice their objection at the end of the Chief Minister’s address, the members of the opposition staged a walkout.

The Chief Minister then proceeded to list the steps taken by her to retrieve Katchatheevu.
