In order to avoid usage of plastics, a sweet outlet in the city is using containers made of Arecanut leaves (pakku mattai) for packing sweets as an eco-friendly alternative.

The sweet outlets of RHR Hotels in the city have begun using ecofriendly materials to pack sweets such that it can also be disposed easily.

R Gurumoorthy, Director of RHR Hotels.Pvt.LTd told Covai Post that they had started using boxes made of pakku mattai 15 days before Diwali.

He said that customers have welcomed the change as it will also help in creating an awareness among the public on the need to avoid plastics and keep the environment clean. “We also provide cloth bags for the customers in order to avoid plastics”.

He also said that the hotel serves food items to the customers in their own containers.

Guhan, Admin of Facebook group named Coimbatore Food Guide said ” nowadays Diwali is more about sweets and crackers rather than a festival of lights. People celebrate Diwali with sweets and offer them as gifts to their near and dear ones.”

He said that plastic containers are dumped in huge numbers by shopkeepers. Despite knowing the perils of plastic many are unmindful of the plastic containers used to parcel food items.

He also said that many leading restaurants have stopped using banana leaves which is eco friendly alternative and good for packing food items.

“Through our Facebook page we are encouraging our members to carry cloth bags always in their vehicle. They are also urged to carry cloth bags to the fashion outlets in malls where carry bags are now being charged,” he added.

The owners of food outlets in the city should take into consideration the health of the people and future of society by going the ecofriendly way, he suggested.
