Angry coconut farmers today protested in front of the Copra Procurement Centre in Pollachi and unloaded their produce on the ground. They were agitating against the non-procurement of copra for the last few days.

The centre was opened on June 15, and copra was procured on the inaugural day. The coconut growers were not given proper reasons, by the officials, for not procuring copra since then. The farmers brought 150 bags of copra yesterday, which too were not procured, they said.

To show their protest, the growers dumped all their copra in front of the centre and staged a demonstration. They dispersed only after some officials assured to buy copra from them on regular basis.
