The price of good quality coconut will hover around Rs 10 per nut and good quality copra will fetch up to Rs 60 per kg during December.

The Price Forecasting scheme in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analysed the prices of coconut and copra in the last 14 years in the Avalpoonthurai Regulated market of Erode district and Perundurai Cooperative Marketing Society respectively and arrived at these prices.

Coconut was cultivated in 0.46 million hectares with a production of 6,917 million nuts in Tamil Nadu during 2014-15, with Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Kanyakumari, Tirupur, Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Theni, Vellore, Salem, Dharmapuri and Tirunelveli being the major coconut producing districts in the state.

The coconut production is low compared to last season due to uneven rainfall and the coming festival season will enhance the demand for coconut in domestic market, resulting in increase in the prices, the analysis said.

However, the increase in coconut prices will not influence the copra price as it is festival occasion in major parts of the Southern India.
