Commemorating the 69th anniversary of Indian Independence, students in Coimbatore created a record by making an 1824 metre long national flag, considered to be the longest in the world.
The novel initiate was jointly organised by Elite Circle, Karamadai Sri Sakthi Engineering College, Lions Club, Martin Homeopathy Medical College, and Aroma Milk at Karamadai. As many as 1216 students drawn from various schools in Coimbatore district took part in the mega event.
Students used their palms to make the tricolour impressions on the cloth. Mettupalayam D.S.P Ravishankar flagged off the event at Sri Sakthi Engineering College campus. About 1900 metre length white cloth material, in addition to 1500 litres of emulsion paints for the tricolour were used by the students to make the record-setting national flag.
The event which commenced at 9 AM was completed by 1 PM. The flag was dedicated to the Missile Man of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Earlier, the students paid homage to Dr. Kalam and took an oath to make his dream a reality. London World Elite Records Indian Adjudicator Karthikeyan Jawahar, Singapore Asian Records Academy adjudicator A.K. Senthil Kumar, Mumbai Records Academy manager Jagannathan, and American Record Setter and Tamizhan Book of Records inspector L. Rajkrishna were the judges for the record event.
After the successful completion of the world’s lengthiest national flag by the students, the world record certificates were given away by the judge panel to the organizers. The judges also gave away two individual certificates to the students who took part in the mega event.
Others present at the event included Karamadai Sri Sakthi Engineering College chairman Dharmalingam, correspondent Dr. Karthikeyan, Aroma Milk chairman Ponnusamy, Lions Club district governor Thangapazham, trustee Punithavalli, principal Velmurugan, Elite Circle Dr. Pradeep Kumar, and college coordinator Manoharan.
