More than 1500 sportsmen from all over the state will be participating in the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation’s (TANGEDCO) Inter Zonal sports meet, to be held in Coimbatore, from September 1.

Spanning over ten days, from September 1 to 10, the tournament will see male employees of TANGEDCO competing in 14 games, including cricket, football, volleyball, hockey, shuttle and ball badminton, and athletics. The competitions will be held in seven venues including the TANGEDCO campus at Tatabad, VOC Park Grounds, PSG IMS and PSG Hospitals, Perks Higher Secondary School, and Bharathiyar University. The closing ceremony will be held at Nehru Stadium.

Briefing the media here in Coimbatore, T. Haldorai, Chief Engineer (Distribution), Coimbatore, said that sportsmen from all the eight zones – Chennai, Tirunelveli, Erode, Vellore, Madurai, Trichy, Villupuram, and Coimbatore – will participate in the games.

Haldorai, who was the former President of the Nilgiris Basketball Association, added that the games were held to emphasise the importance of sports.

Talking about the talents in Coimbatore, he said that the zone was stronger in sports like hockey, basketball, and football, where the team had always finished among the top two.

“This year we are hoping to do well in Kabbadi and cricket as well,” he said, adding that the zone also had a good mix of young and experienced players in all the games.

Over 350 members will be representing the Coimbatore district at the sports meet.
