The Coimbatore chapter of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association has urged the District Collector to take action against a private water supplier, whom, it alleged, was drawing water from a bore well for commercial purposes.

In a petition to the Collector, the association said Kanishka Water Suppliers, operating in Ward 32 of Villankurichi, was drawing ground water from a bore well for commercial purposes.

It alleged that the supplier does not have any proper documents. “This has affected the livelihood of farmers living in the area,” the petition said and added that the supplier was drawing huge quantity of water. “As a result of this individual wells and also the common wells in the area have gone dry. People draw water from the common wells for their every day needs,” S. Palanisami, President of the Association, said.

“We complained to the Corporation four times before. No action has been taken so far,” he added.

The Association also requested the Collector to allow farmers to take ‘vandal sand’ from the lakes where maintenance work was being carried out and prevent smuggling of the sand.
