Around 85 students from various colleges were today educated about child labour and its impact on the society, in Coimbatore. The students were also taught about the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) and how it functions.

Talking at the orientation session, T.V. Vijayakumar, Project Director of NCLP, Coimbatore, explained the situations where the organization steps in to rescue children.

“Children under the age of 18 should not be involved in hazardous work, and those under the age of 14 should not be involved in any work at all,” he said, adding that, if found, those employing children will be punished under the law.

He further informed that the rescued children are monitored by the NCLP, and most of the educational expenses are borne by the government.

“Once rescued, the children are given counselling, along with parents, to make them understand the benefits of education and its importance in life,” he added.
