Corrupt customs appraiser gets one year jail

MV Swaminathan. an appraiser with the Chennai Customs, was convicted by a CBI court on Wednesday, and was sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment, in connection with a disproportionate case. The court also ordered that all his wealth and assets be confiscated too.

Ms. Meena Kumari, the XIV Additional Special Judge for CBI cases, also imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 on Swaminathan, in the case that was filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

According to the case filed by the Anti Corruption Branch of the CBI, between January 1 and September 30, 1998, Swaminthan, while working as an appraiser, had acquired assets to the tune of Rs.22,27,182 in his and his father-in-law’s names. The assets were disproportionate to his known sources of income.
