Couple die in road mishap near Avinashi

Coimbatore: A husband and wife died when a car rammed their two-wheeler on the Salem-Coimbatore highway near Avinashi on Friday.

The victims are identified as Palanisaamy (35) and his wife Malliga (29) of Aalampalayam near Thekkalur. The incident happened when Palanisamy tried to go past a goods vehicle parked on the road. The car, moving towards
Coimbatore, hit the two-wheeler from behind.

Sources said the accident happened because of transport officer Senthil Ram, as part vehicle inspection on the highway, had ordered parking of the goods vehicle against the rule.

Palanisaamy moved to the next track to go past the vehicle. But a car coming from behind hit Palanisaamy’s two-wheeler and then hit the barricade. The car driver fled from the scene.

People in that area rushed the couple to Avinashi Government Hospital, but they died on the way People in the locality blocked the road demanding arrest of the Regional Transport officer who also left the scene.
