Members of the CPI (M) petitioned District Collector Archana Patnaik here on Monday to allocate houses for residents of Vellalore in the housing quarters that is being built by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board.
In a petition to the Collector the members said that 740-acre land was taken by the Government from villagers of Vellalore in year 1980 for a low cost. From then they had been living in rented houses.
“Now people are forced to live in clusters within a single building by using cardboard for walls. This is because they do not have their own land,” said one of the petitioners.
“The Government is constructing 2,862 houses and it would be helpful if the District Administration allotted 10 per cent of the houses in Coimbatore for the people of Vellalore,” he added.
He further stated that houses should be allotted based on economic status, then to widows and daily wage earners.
