In a straight-out-of-a-movie kind of chase, a man rescued his one-year-old kid from the kidnappers by latching on the car’s driver for nearly two kilometres on the outskirts of Coimbatore.

Nearly 20 families from Bhopal stay on the platforms near Narasimhanaickenpalayam, and earn their livelihood by making and selling knives, sickles, and machetes for household use.

At around 5 AM yesterday, a three-member gang, including a woman, stopped their car near the place where the families were asleep, and suddenly got down and took away the sleeping baby, Rohit. Hearing the noises, Rohit’s father, Suresh woke up and immediately chased the car.

He managed to catch hold of the driver by his neck and latched on, while the car started to move. Even as the other man in the car began to stab Suresh with a knife, he held on to the driver’s neck.

The car would have covered about two kilometres by the time two two-motorcycle borne youths noticed the profusely bleeding Suresh latching on the window. They chased the car, stopped in front of it, and caught hold of the driver. By then the other man began to drive the car and fled the scene. The two young men, Nandakumar and Nandu, handed over the driver to the members of the public and began chasing the car again and caught them.

All the three kidnappers were handed over to the Periyanaickenpalayam police.

The kidnappers were identified as Siraj Mohideen and Mohammed Ali from Kitchipalayam in Salem. The woman, Poongodi, is believed to be a prostitute.

The child’s father, Suresh, is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
