Demonetized money to the tune of Rs. 1.75 crores seized

Thanjavur: The officials of a static surveillance team here seized demonetized currency notes to the tune of Rs. 1.75 crores today while it was being taken by Corporation Bank employees in a vehicle, on account of some discrepancies in the documents.

With the election model code of conduct being in force in view of the ensuing elections for Thanjavur constituency, the officials of the static surveillance team led by LIC development officer Ilayaraja along with central reserve police force were conducting a vehicle check at Palliagraharam near here when they stumbled upon the vehicle which contained the demonetized currency notes to the tune of Rs. 1,75,50,000.

The money belonged to Corporation Bank and was being transported to the bank’s Karaikkal branch from the Thanjavur branch without any police escort. Only two women staff accompanied the money. However, there was no mention of the vehicle’s number or the names of the staff members in the documents.

Subsequently, the vehicle along with the money was taken to the Thanjavur taluk office. However, on the orders of District Collector A Annadurai the vehicle was let off with the money and handed over to the bank officials.
