About 1,000 DMK workers, including an MLA, were arrested today while holding a demonstration in front of ration shops. They were protesting against the increase in the price of PDS sugar.

The activists raised slogans against the Government for not taking steps to reduce the prices, making life difficult for many.

Demonstrations were held in front of 150 ration shops in the district.

Singanallur legislator N Karthik and party district leaders participated in the protests meetings, police said.

Arrests were made in nearby Tirupur and Nilgiris districts where demonstrations were held in front of nearly 420 shops, they added.
