It is not yet May, which is considered to be the hottest month of the summer season, but the temperatures in Coimbatore tell a different story altogether. The heat has become unbearable and is taking a toll on children and all age groups. Doctors have urged people to consume a lot of water to stay protected from repercussions resulting from excessive heat.
“Even on a normal day I advise people to consume at least eight litres of water. During summer it is needed to consume at least 10 litres of water. This not only keeps the body hydrated, but also helps in flushing out the toxins from the body, which is essential to stay fit,” Dr. R. Kala, a city-based specialist of Ethnic Health Care, Ganapathy, says.
With the temperatures expected to soar in the coming days, she has cautioned against sun-borne diseases.
According to General Physician Dr. Muthaiya R.M. it is equally important that people eat a balanced diet along with intake of water. “The weather is such that it kills hunger. However, it is important that people consume food that is easy to digest. Light food like curd rice, the South Indian rasam, idly and lots of salads are advised. They are easy to prepare and safe to consume too during the summer.”
Dr. Kala also tells us that the human body is created in such a way that it can take the heat and the cold too. Only patients who suffer from chronic illness, who are generally physically weak need to worry. “Last year during the summer dengue fever was reported in several parts in the State. This year so far there has been no news of any disease anywhere. There is no cause to worry about the heat as long as people are healthy.”
