Dubsmash movie from Coimbatore youth

From actors, sportspersons, businessmen to the common man, not many escaped the influence of Dubsmash, a dubbing Android application that took the social media by storm.

While many people dubbed dialogues from comedy scenes, some went on to dub famous words of current politicians and even that of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa’s famous campaigning quote, “seiveergala, neengal seiveergala” (will you do it ?). Differing from the flock, a group of youth based in Coimbatore has created a short film shot entirely using the Dubsmash application.

The short film titled ‘Mind Voice’ circles around the story of an unemployed engineer who is in love with a girl who spends all his money shopping.

Talking about the film, A. Franklin Yesudas, a 22-year old engineer from Gandhipuram in Coimbatore, who directed the film, says that the idea started when he attempted to record and upload a self-made Dubsmash video for Valentine’s Day on February 14.

“I first recorded my voice in a recording application and later uploaded it on Dubsmash and then made a small video that paved a way for the movie,” he says.

However, shooting a film on Dubsmash created many troubles for the crew as they could not shoot more than 10 seconds on the application.

“You have to create a decent story first; write the script; record the audio; upload the audio on Dubsmash and then dub along with the video. Usually people dub after the scenes are shot, but here it is all different as you have to dub and then sink the lip movements,” adds Franklin.

Franklin also adds that the efforts of his crew J. Allen Joshva Thomas, P. Aravind, M. Kumaresan, K. Balaji, Aravind Karthick and Jerlin, the heroine of the film who made the idea possible.

The film indeed has no worthy storyline at all and is similar to a typical short film format of college students, involving a boring, retold love story of a penniless boy borrowing money, bike and even colourful outfits just to entertain his lady love.

Yet, brushing the story aside, which is a not so entertaining one, the attempt to shoot the 18-minute film entirely on Dubsmash, a first of its kind initiative, would certainly create a new trend among the youth encouraging them to make similar attempts in the future.
