EC cracks the whip on violation of Model Code of Conduct

The Election Commission (EC) in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday said unaccounted money seizure across the State has crossed the Rs 20 crore mark so far.

This is besides the gift articles, including jewellery, worth several lakhs of rupees, and confiscation of hundreds of cases of liquor bottles.

As of Tuesday, the EC received a total of 2,04,206 complaints related to the violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). During the same period 1,127 FIRs have been registered against those who violated the MCC.

Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said the Commission has so far seized Rs 20.24 crore unaccounted money and on Tuesday alone the money seizure exceeded more than Rs 16 lakh.

According to EC, cameras have been installed at nearly 38,000 places in the State to check the violation of MCC.

All the money seized by the EC was deposited in the Treasury. The CEO also said about 1,500 flying squad personnel have been appointed at various check points across the State to check malpractices during election.

In Coimbatore the amount has touched Rs. 42.59 lakh. Of this, about Rs.18.20 lakh have been returned to those who have produced valid documents to account for the money carried.

So far registered 246 cases have been registered for violation of the MCC in 10 constituencies in the district.
