‘Expert obstetric management mandatory to save mothers’

About 800 women die everyday globally due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and child birth. Out of this, 20 per cent are from India. The annual rate of mortality is about 55,000 women during child birth, according to Dr. P. Sukumaran, Dean, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital.

Delivering his address at the Saving Mothers – Capacity Building Workshop organised by Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, along with AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) he said expert obstetric management and providing the highest possible level of care is mandatory to save the mothers.

“There is a constant effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 5, where by mortality rate of 109/100,000 live births is envisioned. It is heartening to say that Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have achieved that goal,” he said.

About 40 doctors in and around Coimbatore participated in the workshop.
