Nearly 100 farmers, belonging to the Tamizhaga Vyavasiyagal Sangham (Tamil Nadu Farmers Association) today staged a demonstration near Mettupalayam against the construction of high tension electricity towers in agriculture farms, which have serious adverse effects on the crops.

The protesters, led by MR Sivasamy, have alleged that the Government had not previously paid any compensation for erecting these towers in the farmlands. Construction of these towers has resumed again, leading to problems for the farmers.

Alleging that the TNEB officials were threatening them of dire consequences if they refused to give the land, the farmers said that crops in the vicinity of these towers were getting affected by the electromagnetic radiation from them.

They have demanded adequate compensation to the towers constructed in the past and for the newly constructed ones.
