Thanjavur: Farmers associations have announced that they will undertake a fast on August 6 in Thanjavur to protest against the MLAs and MPs of Tamil Nadu who did not raise the Cauvery issue in the ongoing parliamentary sessions and in the state assembly.

The decision was made at the state council meeting held in Thanjavur today.

Talking to the media after the meeting, the state vice-president Dhanabal said that the delta region, also known as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, is turning into a desert as Karnataka, for the fifth consecutive year, refuses to release water for irrigation.

He accused the centre of ignoring this issue and of delaying the implementation of the Cauvery tribunal’s final verdict. Instead of raising issues like these, Dhanabal accused the MLAs of “vying with one another” to earn the Chief Minister’s goodwill.

He also said that the MPs from Tamil Nadu have not taken up the Cauvery and other issues in the Parliament.
Therefore, to condemn this lack of commitment on the part of the MLAs and MPs in resolving the issue, the farmers in the Cauvery delta region have resolved to go on a fast in Thanjavur on August 6, he added.
