Chennai: With the Election Commission asking the State Governmnet to register an FIR against persons involved in bribing the voters for the R K Nagar bypoll which was later called off, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami on Monday said a case has been filed by the poll panel with regard to the issue.

“A case has been registered after obtaining permission from the Metropolitan Magistrate court. Investigation is going on,” Palaniswami told the House soon after Opposition DMK members raised the issue and sought a discussion.

The Chief Minister did not disclose the names of the persons mentioned in the FIR.

The ECI had ordered registration of an FIR against persons allegedly involved in the cash-for-votes allegation during the RK Nagar by-election campaign.

ECI’s initiative was revealed in a reply to a RTI application filed by advocate Vairakannan. He had wanted to know what action had been proposed against Palaniswami, Electricity Minister P Thangamani, Education Minister K A Sengottiyan, Health Minister Vijaya Bhaskar, Co-operative Mminister Sellur Raju and AIADMK Amma candidate TTV Dhinakaran on the charge of distributing money to voters.

The ECI on May 25 said it had “directed that an FIR may be filed by the returning officer”.
