Five accused remanded to 15-day judicial custody

Five persons arrested in connection with the killing of a Dalit youth Shankar in Udumalpet in Tirupur district, were remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

The accused were produced before the Udumalpet Judicial Magistrate 1R. Srividhya early today, who ordered to remand them to judicial custody.

Police have produced the weapons and vehicles allegedly used in the brutal act.

All the accused – Manikandan, Jagadeeshwaran, Madan alias Michael, Selvakumar and Manikandan, are being brought here to be lodged in the Central Prison, police said.

Shankar was hacked to death in what is said to be a honour killing while his wife Kausalya is recuperating at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital with head injuries.

Kausalya’s father Chinnasamy has already surrendered before the police.

Meanwhile, a team from National Commission for Scheduled Castes is on a visit to Kumaralingam, the native place of Shankar, to meet his parents and also Kausalya in the hospital here, police said.
