Thanjavur: Police arrested a gang of five robbers near Valangaiman on Sunday night and recovered weapons, including knives and iron rods, from them. However, one more robber managed to flee.

A police team attached to Valangaiman police station was on routine night patrol when they stumbled upon a gang of six robbers attempting to rob money from Veeraiyan, a resident of Mela Street of Govindagudi village, who was going via the bridge at Poondi village. Subsequently, police rounded up the gangsters and nabbed five of them while one more robber, later identified as Nedumaran of Valangaiman, managed to escape in his motorbike.

The five robbers were identified as Kuberan (18) of Aniyamangalam, Keerthivasan (17) of North Agraharam, Valangaiman, Vinod Kumar (22) of Mela Street, Sakkottai, Moideen (32) of Mosque Street, Madukkur and Shanmugasundaram (22) of Chinnagaram.

Police also recovered Rs. 22,000 in cash, chilli powder, iron rods, iron pipes and knives from the gangsters.
