A research by the Ganga Hospital and Ganga Research Centre has bagged the prestigious ISSLS award in Athens in Greece.

The research by the centre started in 2014 is considered a breakthrough in the treatment of disc degeneration. Titled `Is infection the initiator of disc degeneration? Results from proteomic study’, it is said to have brought about a paradigm shift in the way low back pain would be looked into and treated in future.

The paper was among the 40 studies submitted and carried as the lead article in the European Spine Journal. The centre has won a cash award of $20000 (Rs 6.5 lakh).

A hospital statement said the research was also the first to adopt twin-approach using two molecular tools – proteomics and 16S rDNA analyses.

This is the fourth time Ganga Hospital has won such a prestigious award.
