Sri Krishna Institutions, Coimbatore, celebrated its 14th Graduation Day today. G. Vishwanathan, the founder-chancellor of VIT University, Vellore, was the chief guest at the celebrations. A total of 2,138 graduates from three colleges belonging to the Sri Krishna group, received their degree certificates. 79 rank holders were honoured at the ceremony.

Addressing the students of Sri Krishna Institutions, he said that of the 14 crore students who are eligible to pursue higher education in India, only 3.5 crore students make it. On the quality and standard of education in the country, he quoted a 2010 UNESCO report that ranked India at No.100 among 150 countries.

“The Medical Council of India had downsized the number of medical seats by 4,000,” he said, adding that more than one lakh seats were vacant in engineering courses last year. “The Gross Enrollment Ratio in India was as low as 20 percent, compared to 70 percent in developed countries,” he added.

He encouraged the youth to not only concentrate on their families and themselves, but also to take efforts to bring about changes in the society plagued by corruption, tax evasion, and black money.
