When their son was born with a disability, late S.V. Ramaswamy and his wife Namagiriammal never felt bad. Instead, they garnered all their energies and resources into making S.R. Krishnamurthy a confident person.

Their efforts paid off and today wheelchair-bound Krishnamurthy is counted as one of the best Carnatic musicians in the country. He was born in Coimbatore and did his schooling in Udhagamandalam. His absence of hands and legs does not fail him in enthralling his audience with his remarkable performances.

“Age is just a number for me and I will continue to sing and perform Carnatic music till the last breath of my life,” says this 70-year-old vocalist. When asked what keeps him going at this age, in a jiffy comes the answer, “My inward energy, the will power to keep moving ahead and the determination to achieve things,” Krishnamurthy says.

It was his sister Venkatalakshmi who introduced Krishnamurthy to Carnatic music when he was very young. Later he continued his training from Meenakshiammal. He is a disciple of the great Vidwan Tiger Varadachari. He is also a proficient Harikatha artist.

Krishnamurthy did his first stage performance when he was as young as 16. Till date he has performed in more than 2,500 shows and marriages across the country. Apart from music there is another side to Krishnamurthy.

He believes that it is the self confidence and determination to achieve things that has helped him deal with his disability and has brought him this far in life. He passes down a few words of motivation and the valuable lessons of life to children from Government aided schools. Till date he has addressed more than 1.5 lakh students in Government run schools across Tamil Nadu.

A source of inspiration for many, we asked him who his motivation was. His face lights up with a smile when he says “A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Swamy Vivekananda are my inspiration.”

Recently, a city based NGO launched a documentary that brings to light how this gifted Carnatic musician’s life and how he has overcome the challenges that life has thrown him.
