Coimbatore city witnessed celebrations on Women’s Day in the form of dance, music, entertainment, contests, rallies and medical camps. But, the tribal area under Siruvani Adivaram Post Office in Coimbatore Postal Division celebrated the spirit of womanhood with a difference.

Under the Sukanya Samridhi Yojana, this tribal area has achieved 100 percent coverage for the girl children of the region. This is the first tribal area in the country to achieve this distinction. The scheme, launched by the Prime Minister in January 2015, requires an initial deposit of Rs.1000/- per girl child. The initial deposit was voluntarily contributed by the Postal Employees of Coimbatore Postal Division belonging to National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE) Union.

A function was organized and Manju P. Pillai, the Postmaster General of the Western Region, Coimbatore, was the chief guest. She distributed the passbooks to all the girls of this tribal region. “This is an attempt by the Department of Posts to help the girl children to meet their future challenges,” Manju said.

She also emphasized on the role of Government in securing financial future of the girl child as part of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ programme, which will support them for their higher studies as well as their marriage.

At the event, Alexin George, Senior Superintendent of Post, Coimbatore Division, appreciated the gesture of the employees of Coimbatore Postal Division. Thamarai Chandran, Programme Head, All India Radio Coimbatore; and Santosh N.K., D.Ebenezir Gandhi and R. Velusamy of the National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE) Union were also present at the function.
