Veterinarians today conducted a postmortem on the 30-year-old elephant that died near Narasipuram in the city outskirts yesterday.
The postmortem report said that the pachyderm died due to internal injuries and bleeding due to a fall.
The doctors had a tough time in getting the calf move away from the carcass. The calf was preventing the officials and veterinarians get near its mother. Though officials managed to move it away, it returned again to wake her up.
A kumki was brought in for the purpose, but when the two started playing, officials placed bananas, sugarcane and jack fruit at a distance.
As expected the pachyderms moved towards the fruits, Dr. Devraj conducted the autopsy. The elephant was buried in the same spot later.
