The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa once again demanded that the centre and Narendra Modi intervene and put an end to the constant attacks on the fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.

In yet another letter to the Prime Minister, who is currently on a tour of the US, she requested him to secure the immediate release of the 15 fishermen and 91 fishing boats that were taken away by the Sri Lankan navy.

In the letter, copy of which was released to the media, she said that, in the third such incident within a week, four fishermen in a mechanised fishing boat from Rameswaram were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on June 4, and taken to Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka.

The Chief Minister pointed out that she had been sending repeated reminders to the centre to step up diplomatic pressures to put an end to this issue.

Citing the ‘unconstitutional ceding of Katchatheevu’ by the agreements of 1974 and 1976 as the core reason for this issue, she requested the Centre once again to use diplomatic channels to ensure the safety of the fishermen and secure the release of the 15 fishermen and 91 fishing boats currently in Sri Lankan custody.
