Officials of the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department have taken samples of cakes from a Department Store after a customer complained of spotting fungi on it, here on Thursday.

According to the customer, A. Ashok Kumar a private employee, he had bought five pieces of a fresh cream cake from the Kannan Departmental Store in Alandurai for his nephew Thirukumaran. He alleged that his nephew vomited after consuming a piece of the cake and said that he was rushed to a nearby clinic.

“The doctors told us that it was because of something that he consumed. When we checked the cake, it was in a rotten condition,” he said.

Ashok further claimed that this was not the first time such an incident had happened in connection with the store and added that there were numerous occasions when they had bought rotten items.

“Every time we make a complaint with the staff, they just exchange the product and do not respond in a responsible manner,” he alleged.

A complaint was filed in this regard with the Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department and they conducted a raid in the store.

Dr R. Karthikeyan, the Designated Officer of the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department said that during the raid, the officials took a sample of the spoilt cake for tests.

“The cake was in a bad condition when we took samples and we can act only after the report of the investigation arrives,” he said.

Karthikeyan added that the research report would take 14 days and assured that the Department would take action against the store based on that.
