In a second time in less than a month, electricity production came to a grinding halt at the 1,000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Plant (KNPP).
This comes at a time when the Tamil Nadu Government has already expressed serious concern over the interrupted power supply from the plant. The interruption was due to a leak in the feed water system. The technical snag has cost the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) a loss of over Rs.5 crore per day of outage.
The power production that was about 600 MW since Tuesday evening had to be stopped because of the snag. It is expected to be rectified in a few days, according to officials.
The plant started functioning on January 30 after a seven-month maintenance period. However, it was stopped on February 13 because of a leak in the turbine unit pipe. Even after rectification the problem seems to reoccur. Officials are taking efforts to replace it.
In the meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Government had written to the Centre for instructing NPCIL to provide uninterrupted power to the State.
During full capacity production, Tamil Nadu will get 562.50 MW, followed by Karnataka, which will receive 221 MW. Kerala will be allocated 133 MW, while Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry will receive 50 MW and 33.50 MW respectively.
