The city-based Brookefeilds Mall joined hands with corporate house Bosch, NGO My City Clean City (MC3), and the Rotary Club of Coimbatore to launch Kovai Green League (KGL) campaign, with the aim of realizing the dream and vision of Dr. A.P.J Kalam. Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) Commissioner Dr. Vijay Karthikeyan declared KGL open at Brookefeilds Mall this morning.
“The objective of this campaign is to increase the green cover in our city by involving the schools, corporate houses and the citizens of Coimbatore,” N.A. Sujatha, Manager-Marketing, Brookefields, said.
In a bid to increase the green cover in our city, KGL has partnered with private and corporation schools. Students from these schools will be encouraged to create wealth out of the waste generated in their campus. Students will be made aware of subjects like rainwater harvesting, ways and means to increase the green cover, and other environmental issues.
Currently, five schools are participating in KGL. The project will be implemented in many more schools in Coimbatore in a phased manner. The participating schools are Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Coimbatore Public School, R.K. Sree Rangammal Higher Secondary School, Corporation Higher Secondary School, and Coimbatore Ranganathapuram Girls Higher Secondary School. The Principals of the five participating schools, along with a few students, were present at the launch.
Dr. Vijay Karthikeyan launched the logo for KGL campaign and planted a sapling. He also handed over a sapling to each of the heads of the five participating schools. “KGL reminds me of Kovai Environmental League (KEL) campaign. We had 18 schools participating in this KEL campaign. As part of KEL, we organized several competitions to engage the school students. I’m happy that we have launched the KGL campaign today. School children have to work towards making the dream of our former president, of creating a greener tomorrow, come true,” Dr. Vijay Karthikeyan said.
