Language training to Malaysian students at Bharathiar University

The University of Malaya, Malaysia, has sent 14 students to the Department of Linguistics in Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, for a 20-day special training on Tamil linguistics. The course will help in furthering their understanding of the language.

The training, starting on July 4, will cover Tamil teaching, translation, computational linguistics, language use in various domains, language teaching, and learning in multi-linguistic context. Experts in linguistics from various parts of Tamil Nadu and members of the faculty will provide training to the students. The training concludes on July 24.

The Department of Linguistics is involved in linguistic research for the past three decades on both major and minor, and minority languages. The department has been selected by the UGC, under special assistance programme, for studying tribal languages of Western Ghats.

The department has received a special grant of Rs.41 lakhs for the study, and a sum of Rs.2 crores to protect endangered indigenous languages. The programme will be inaugurated by the University Vice-Chancellor, A. Ganapathi.
