The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre has forecasted that the prices of maize will remain stable this season, at around Rs.1,500-1,550 per quintal, during its harvest season in January-February, 2016. The current price is around Rs.1,500-1,520 per quintal at the Udumalpet regulated market.

Authorities believe that the domestic demands will be more than enough to compensate for the low export demands.

Maize was cultivated in 0.33 million hectares in Tamil Nadu in 2014-15. The total production was 1.81 million tonnes. The state’s demand, which is almost twice its total production, is met with by arrivals from other states like Karnataka, from December end to February.

Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are the major cultivators of maize in India.
