In yet another fatality caused by the rising human-elephant conflict, a 50-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant, reportedly due to his own negligence, on Tuesday.

According to sources, the deceased, K. Nagarajan from Jagikombai, an Irula hamlet in Coonoor, was on his way to visit his sister in Kozhithurai village when the incident occurred.

Despite strict warning from the forest department officials, to not enter the Mamaram Kozhikari estate since elephants ventured frequently, with the jackfruit season going on, Nagarajan had reportedly quarrelled with the watchman of the estate, who had refused to let him take the estate road.

Since he was in an inebriated condition, Nagarajan forced his way into the estate and was later found dead on Tuesday morning. The incident had occurred on Monday night.

An immediate solatium of Rs. 25,000 was given to the family, and an additional Rs. 2.75 lakhs will be provided later, according to officials.

Coonoor police have registered a case and are investigating.
