A group of nearly 20 persons, majority of them women, today attempted a mass self-immolation bid in front of the District Collectorate, seeking to take action against a person, who had reportedly cheated them to get deeds of land provided by the Government near Karamadai on the outskirts.
According to police, about 50 persons came to the collectorate and sat in protest claiming that one Karki, running an organisation Samathuva Kazhakam, had promised to get pattas for the Panchami land given to them by the Government some years ago.
Nearly 20 persons, including 12 women and four children, doused themselves with kerosene in a bid to immolate themselves, police said.
However police alerted Fire and Rescue Personnel who pumped water on them, police said. Police sent five persons as representatives to submit a memorandum in this regard to the Department concerned.
Meanwhile, Karki, a lawyer by profession, in a statement blamed some political parties for instigating the villagers for the immolation bid.
He said that there was no proper documents to support the allegations and the villagers were agitating without any evidence, instigated by some politicians.
