A one-month-old elephant calf died in the camp at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in Nilgiris district, today.

The calf was found in the jungles of Sirumugai, left alone by its mother, some 15 days ago and forest department officials took it to the MTR Elephant Camp at Theppakadu.

It was fed milk daily and was looked after by two mahouts. The calf suddenly vomited and died around 7.30 am in the camp.

Forest department veterinarian Dr Vijayaraghavan said that it could be due to indigestion. After post mortem, the calf will be buried in the camp in the evening.
