Lalithaa Kumaramangalam, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) has said that they will look into the plight of women workers at the plantations.
The decision, she said, was made after knowing about the problems the women plantation workers in Kerala faced. She clarified that NCW was authorized to look into not just the crimes committed against women, but also to take up instances of gender-based exploitation. 70 percent of workers in the plantation sector are women, she said.
Revealing that there was no concrete statistics on the female plantation workers or their working conditions in the past 25 years, she said that she will soon be visiting Munnar as part of the study.
The research is most likely to commence in another few months. The agency to carry out the study has not been finalized yet.
