Dr. M. Muthu Saravana Kumar from Coimbatore and Dr. Adam Cote from the United States did a knee surgery using freedom knee implant, specially designed for Asian anatomy and life style, here on Wednesday.

Briefing reporters after the operation, Orthopedic and Joint Replacement surgeon Dr. Muthu Saravana Kumar from Dr. Muthu’s Hospital in Coimbatore said that the implant, which was manufactured in the U.S. would be a perfect fit for Asians and it was also approved by US FDA. “It is a boon to the people of Coimbatore and is a validated design,” said the surgeon.

He added that Indian doctors always faced a challenge in knee joint replacement surgeries as the Indian lifestyle demanded a significant bending of knee joints many times beyond 150 degree. “Indian doctors have struggled hard to give a perfectly fitting high flexible joint replacement to the patients and it is indeed a boon that the newly developed freedom knee implant meets the needs,” he added.

Dr.Adam Cote from the Carson City, Michigan, said that such inventions were possible because of the exchange of expertise from both the countries in the field of joint replacement. “This will allow us to exchange the latest technology and developments in the field and also provide the best treatment to the knee and hip arthritis patients,” he informed.
