Federation of Tamil Nadu Agriculturalists’ Associations today, in a statement, asked the Tamil Nadu Government whether the sugar mills would accept to pay the increased prices for sugarcane.
Federation Secretary, S. Nallasamy expressed doubt on the implementation of the price of sugarcane fixed at Rs.2,850 per tonne. Sugarcane growers had an arrear of Rs.800 crore, which indicated that the Government had failed to implement its announcement made last year.
The price was Rs. 2,650 per tonne – Rs. 2,200 by the Centre and Rs. 350 as State Advisory Price and Rs.100 for transportation.
The mills were not paying Rs.350 fixed by the State, alleging that the Government had no power to announce the advisory price, which led to the arrears of Rs.800 crore, he said.
In this background, the new announcement by the Government appeared to “be ridiculous”, Nallasamy said.
