The National Human Rights Commission today issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Government to submit a report in two weeks with regard to a cataract surgery camp in the state in which 16 people’s eyesight was severely affected.
Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports that eyes of 16 people including 12 women were severely affected after a botched up surgery at the Government Hospital, Mettur in Salem, it issued a notice to the Government through its Chief Secretary.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press reports raise serious issues of violation of human rights of the patients due to the apathetic attitude of the medical staff at a government hospital.
It has asked the government authorities to send a report on the incident, the reasons behind it and action taken against those responsible for it
